Step 1: Prepare Your Wall
Wall preparation is the most important step — peel-and-stick wallpaper adheres best to clean, smooth, dry walls.
- Clean the wall: Wipe the wall with a damp cloth to remove dust, grease, and dirt. Allow to dry completely — at least 24 hours.
- Check for smoothness: Peel-and-stick wallpaper adheres best to smooth walls. Heavily textured walls may affect adhesion. See our Textured Walls guide.
- Check the paint: Freshly painted walls need to cure for at least 30 days before applying wallpaper. New paint that hasn't fully cured can peel when the wallpaper is removed.
- Room temperature: Apply wallpaper at room temperature (60–80°F / 15–27°C). Very cold or very hot conditions affect adhesion.
Step 2: Measure and Plan
- Measure your wall: Measure the height and width of the wall. Use our Wallpaper Calculator to confirm how many rolls you need.
- Plan your starting point: Start from the most visible corner of the wall — typically the corner nearest the room's focal point. Work outward from there.
- Mark a vertical line: Use a spirit level or plumb line to mark a perfectly vertical line on the wall. This is your guide for the first panel — walls are rarely perfectly straight, so always use a level rather than the wall corner.
- Plan your pattern: For patterned wallpaper, plan where the pattern will fall on the wall. Ideally, centre the pattern on the most visible part of the wall.
Step 3: Cut Your First Panel
- Unroll the wallpaper and measure the height of your wall, adding 2–3 inches (5–7cm) at the top and bottom for trimming.
- Cut the panel cleanly using a sharp craft knife and straight edge, or scissors.
- For patterned wallpaper, check the pattern repeat and cut subsequent panels to match.
Step 4: Hang the First Panel
- Peel back the top 6–12 inches (15–30cm) of backing: Don't remove the entire backing at once — work in sections from top to bottom.
- Align with your vertical line: Position the top of the panel at the ceiling (or just above it), aligning the edge with your vertical guide line.
- Smooth from top to bottom: Using your smoothing tool, smooth the panel from the centre outward and downward, removing air bubbles as you go.
- Peel and smooth in sections: Continue peeling the backing in 6–12 inch sections, smoothing as you go.
- Work out bubbles immediately: If you see a bubble, lift the panel back to that point and re-smooth. Peel-and-stick wallpaper can be repositioned during installation.
Step 5: Hang Subsequent Panels
- Butt join the panels: Align the edge of the second panel exactly against the edge of the first — no overlap, no gap. A perfect butt join is invisible from a normal viewing distance.
- Match the pattern: For patterned wallpaper, align the pattern across the join before pressing the panel to the wall.
- Continue across the wall: Repeat for each panel, always checking the vertical alignment with your spirit level.
Step 6: Trim the Edges
- Once all panels are hung, trim the excess at the top and bottom using a sharp craft knife and straight edge.
- Trim carefully around light switches, sockets, and other obstacles.
- Press all edges firmly with your smoothing tool.
Step 7: Final Check
- Step back and check the wall from a normal viewing distance for any bubbles, misaligned joins, or untrimmed edges.
- Press any lifting edges firmly with your smoothing tool.
- Wipe any marks from the wall surface with a damp cloth.
Tips for a Perfect Result
- Take your time on the first panel: Getting the first panel perfectly vertical sets up every subsequent panel. Don't rush this step.
- Work in a cool room: Warm rooms make the adhesive more aggressive and harder to reposition. A cool room gives you more working time.
- Don't stretch the wallpaper: Pulling the wallpaper as you apply it can cause it to shrink back and create gaps at the joins.
- Order an extra roll: Always order at least one extra roll for pattern matching, mistakes, and future repairs.
